National Travel and Tourism week is May 1st to May 7th and we were pleased to join with the Wyoming County Board of Supervisors in declaring it Travel and Tourism week in Wyoming County. The county legislative body passed an official proclamation recognizing the week at the regular Board meeting on April 12, 2016.
The Wyoming County Chamber & Tourism is very pleased to celebrate National Travel and Tourism week this year with the official launch of the Wyoming County Approved campaign. Initially introduced in the 2016 Travel Guide with the Wyoming County Approved logo, this official launch will begin the campaign to have visitors share with us what they like about Wyoming County – what they approve! Travelers will be encouraged to share pictures and stories with our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter social media accounts.
To further celebrate, during Travel & Tourism Week (May 1-May 7, 2016) you could have a chance to win a $100 Wyoming County Gift Card! To celebrate the launch of the “Wyoming County Approved” campaign, we encourage you to share what you love about Wyoming County! From May 1 – May 7, make a post about what you love about WYCO to Facebook, Instagram or Twitter and tag the Tourism social media accounts in it. Every post tagged with our accounts during this week will equal one entry into a drawing for the gift card. Posts can be a picture of something you love, or a story about a fun experience you had here. The official Wyoming County Chamber & Tourism social media accounts are: Facebook.com/wyomingcountytourism; Instagram.com/wycotourism; and Twitter.com/wycotourism. Posts can be made to any of the three accounts. A winner will be picked on Monday, May 9th and will be contacted. We can’t wait to see what you consider Wyoming County Approved!
“Tourism is critical to the economic health of our county, and we are very fortunate to have almost two-hundred tourism related businesses in Wyoming County,” said Scott Gardner, President of the Chamber & Tourism office. “Travelers are spending $37 million annually in Wyoming County which generates millions in state and local sales taxes, and the average savings per Wyoming County household from tourism generated taxes is $527. This is an important industry to our attractions, hospitality, and retail businesses across the county.”

National Travel and Tourism Week is May 1-7, 2016. It is an annual tradition that was established by a Congressional Resolution in 1983 and first celebrated the following year. This nationwide week of events serves to champion the power of the travel and tourism industry. Travel and tourism is one of America’s largest industries, generating $2.1 trillion in economic output, with $887.9 billion spent directly by domestic and international travelers that spur an additional $1.2 trillion in other industries.
According to the US Travel Association, tourism directly generated $134 billion in tax revenue for local, state and federal governments in 2013. Travel and tourism is America’s largest services export industry and is one of America’s largest employers. Travel is among the top 10 industries and supported 14.9 million jobs, including 7.9 million directly in the travel industry and 7 million in other industries. One out of every 9 jobs in the U.S. depends on travel and tourism. Each U.S. household would pay $1,093 more in taxes without the tax revenue generated by the travel and tourism industry.
